Garth Hudson, a distinguished multi-instrumentalist and the final surviving member of The Band, passed away at age 87 in Woodstock, New York, on January 21, 2023. Born on August 2, 1937, in Windsor, Ontario, Hudson was immersed in music from an early age. Initially hesitant to join Hawkins' band, The Hawks, he became indispensable after negotiating for a Lowery organ and a $10 weekly payment for providing music lessons. Hudson's immense talent and unique sound significantly shaped The Band’s success and left a lasting influence on rock music history.
Hudson's conditions were a bit odd, but, as the legend goes, he asked for the $10 a week in order to justify the decision to join the band to his parents.
His first official gigs were providing the organ for local church services and for a funeral parlor owned by his uncle.
