
A fire just west of Penn Station suspended Amtrak and NJ Transit service between New York and New Jersey on Friday morning. Two people were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue with serious injuries. Amtrak Empire and Garden State service was halted at 1:25 a.m. and was not expected to resume until the afternoon, with reduced service running north and east of the city. Amtrak offered rebooking opportunities and refunds for affected ticket holders. NJ Transit suspended service between New York Penn Station and Newark Penn Station, with additional cancellations and delays expected. Midtown Direct trains were rerouted to Hoboken, and NJ Transit cross-honored rail tickets on private bus service and PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, and 33rd Street. LIRR was running full service mid-Friday morning, with full service restored at 5:15 a.m. Firefighters responded to a 1:32 a.m. call, dispatched 46 units, and brought the blaze under control by 4:05 a.m. The fire occurred on Track 11 and involved a work train car near the Hudson River Tunnel.
"Amtrak service between the Empire and Garden states, as well as further south, was halted at 1:25 a.m. on May 29 due to the latest fire and is not expected to resume until this afternoon, according to agency spokesperson Jason Abrams. It is also running reduced service north and east of the city. Amtrak is providing rebooking opportunities and refunds to ticket holders affected by the outages, Abrams said."
"Similarly, NJ Transit service between New York Penn Station and Newark Penn Station is suspended with other cancellations and delays expected, according to the agency's website. "An FDNY spokesperson said firefighters received a 911 call about the blaze at 1:32 a.m. and dispatched 46 units, including 141 firefighters and emergency services personnel. They said it broke out on Track 11 and involved a work train car. Abrams said the fire was just outside of the two-tube Hudson River Tunnel, which moves Amtrak and NJ Transit trains between New York and New Jersey."
"The inferno became a second-alarm fire at 2:43 a.m., but firefighters brought it under control by 4:05 a.m., according to the FDNY. Two people affected by the fire were rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue on Manhattan's East Side. The Long Island Rail Road, however, was running full service mid-Friday morning, after some cancellations earlier cancellations, according to the MTA."
