Maxxxim and Nancy NoGood have led an all-ages 'RuPaul's Drag Race' viewing party at Coney Island USA's Freak Bar for two years, creating Southern Brooklyn's only weekly drag show. Drag artist Maxxxim highlights the scarcity of queer spaces throughout Brooklyn's southern neighborhoods, emphasizing their efforts to cultivate community and safety. Drawing from their Russian heritage, Maxxxim incorporates cultural elements into performances while supporting fellow Russian immigrants. This initiative serves as an essential, life-affirming gathering for attendees facing systemic homophobia and provides a distinctive cultural oasis in the area.
For the folks who come from places with systemic homophobia and transphobia, being able to come to our show can be life-affirming. It’s a rare space.
Growing up in Brooklyn, I was perplexed by the lack of queer spaces. I made it my mission to create community spaces for queer individuals.
