How a special workshop helped Staten Island seniors bring their stories to life
Briefly

Medar de la Cruz, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has been conducting a workshop for seniors at the Port Richmond Library on Staten Island. Part of the New York Public Library's Creative Aging program, the workshop focuses on illustration and storytelling, aimed specifically at individuals aged 50 and older. De la Cruz emphasizes accessibility in his teaching, drawing on his own background to connect with participants who seek to develop creative skills in a supportive environment. The workshop fosters learning and socialization among seniors, helping to keep their minds sharp.
I'm glad the library is serving children, teenagers, young adults typing out their resumes, and senior citizens - for socializing and to keep their mind sharp,
Doing work that is accessible to older people, or to people of a different culture, is second-nature to me,
I think it was a natural transition to want to lean toward image-based communication that somebody like my grandmother, who didn't ever learn to read or write, could still react to,
I feel like I arrived naturally at working with older adults for that reason.
