Luna Park celebrates opening day for its 2025 season
Briefly

On March 29, 2025, Luna Park in Coney Island officially opened for the season with excitement and festivities. CEO Alessandro Zamperla emphasized the importance of preserving the historic amusement district and its cultural significance amidst ongoing development threats. The day's events included a ceremonial egg cream christening of the 98-year-old Cyclone roller coaster and a free ride for the first 98 guests. Proceeds from the opening day supported several local organizations, showcasing the park’s commitment to the community. Zamperla also expressed his opposition to a proposed casino in the area, underlining its potential negative impact on the unique character of Coney Island.
The season of Luna Park is a testament to the Coney Island district which is currently under attack from development proposals that would destroy the unique character of this national treasure, its long-standing cultural significance, and this community.
Today's a celebration of the preservation of the historic amusement district that has been the People's Playground for many years, since the 19th century.
For me, the most compelling scenes were the ones at Luna Park with the Thunderbolt and Cyclone in the background.
Part of the proceeds from the day went to local organizations the Coney Island Sharks, Operation H.O.O.D., Children of Promise NYC, Urban Neighborhood Services, and the Coney Island Public Library.
