Anita Rachvelishvili, a celebrated mezzo soprano, has filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Opera after they canceled her performances from 2022 to 2025, alleging deterioration of vocal quality. Rachvelishvili, who became a mother in late 2021, admits to some temporary limitations in her vocal range but insists this did not affect her ability to perform. She alleges that the cancellation of her contracts was discriminatory, stating that she was ready to return to the stage and felt disappointed after supporting the Met during the pandemic.
Rachvelishvili claims her performance contracts were canceled due to alleged deterioration of vocal quality post-pregnancy, which she contends was discriminatory treatment.
She asserts that despite being temporarily limited in her vocal range after childbirth, she was always ready to perform and has since fully recovered.
Expressing shock at the cancellation, Rachvelishvili notes she supported the Met during the pandemic and felt let down by their treatment.
Rachvelishvili stated, 'I loved performing on the Met stage and looked forward to returning after the birth of my first child.'
