These 54 NYC streets will go car-free for one-day only this month

Car-Free Earth Day is set to take place on April 26, marking the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. The initiative will close 54 streets and plazas across New York City to vehicular traffic, fostering community engagement, public art, and educational activities related to sustainability and climate change. NYC DOT is also collaborating with local artists to create temporary environmentally-focused art installations. In addition, Citi Bike is offering a special deal on bike rides to encourage eco-friendly transportation during the event, showcasing the commitment to reducing the city's carbon footprint.
"Car-Free Earth Day is a chance for New Yorkers to enjoy our city's world class streetscapes as open spaces for all," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.
The idea is a simple one: by turning a portion of our city into a car-free zone, officials hope to promote activism and education about sustainable modes of transportation.
