Carl D'Alvia's playful giant sculptures have been installed along Broadway, from 64th to 117th Streets, as part of the 'Broadway Hubbub' public art exhibit. This collaboration with the Broadway Mall Association and NYC Parks features five colorful, large-scale artworks ranging from 5 to 12 feet tall. D'Alvia combines monumental scale with whimsical, human-like forms, inviting passersby to engage with the art in an urban setting. These sculptures will remain on display through November, continuing the tradition of showcasing contemporary art in public spaces.
"I've always seen these large works being out in the world with us, itinerant characters who slouch, bend and wander... while holding a sort of sculptural mirror up to us."
"There's only one Broadway," he added, emphasizing the uniqueness of the location for this vibrant art installation.
The installations are part of D'Alvia's series, known for blending monumental scale with playful, human-like forms, creating a whimsical atmosphere along Central Broadway.
Past artists have included Chakaia Booker, Frank Benson and Sean Scully, showcasing how the Broadway Mall Association continues to push bold contemporary art into public spaces.
