Residents of Brooklyn's District 16 are frustrated with the Department of Education's handling of the dismissal of former Superintendent Brendan Mims. At a recent town hall meeting, parents sought clarity from DOE Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos regarding Mims' removal but were disappointed when the event was framed as being "not a personnel hearing." Many in attendance voiced their desire for transparency and accountability, wearing T-shirts to protest Mims' removal, yet were forbidden from discussing the matter openly during the meeting. The lack of communication has led to community tension and distrust towards the education officials.
However, an email sent out by Community Education Council 16 (CEC16) before the meeting explained that the event was "not a personnel hearing." This came a week after CEC16 requested questions for the Chancellor.
"He was beloved by the community," said Evan Moody, a D16 parent. "There was no rationale or reason. It's about transparency."
"I'm unhappy that they received our questions but were not going to answer them," said a D16 parent named Kate, who declined to disclose her last name. "If they want to establish trust, be transparent and stop pretending everything is normal."
