A 49-year-old man, Long Chen, was critically injured by police after allegedly attacking four young girls, including his nieces, with a meat cleaver. The incident began when an 11-year-old called 911 to report the attack. Officers, responding to screams, found Chen armed and refused to drop the weapon, leading to them firing upon him. All four girls, ages 8 to 16, sustained serious injuries but are expected to survive. The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack remains ongoing, with multiple weapons recovered from the scene.
"The motive behind this horrific attack is still under investigation," said NYPD Chief John Chell. "We will provide more information when we have it."
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the cleaver was covered in blood. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused and allegedly lunged at them, prompting officers to open fire.
