The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has alerted schools about the rising uniform costs impacting families. A survey revealed that 75% of schools require at least one uniform item from recommended retailers, leading to higher prices. The CCPC advocates for schools to consider more generic uniform items and avoid exclusive supplier arrangements to foster competition and reduce parental expenses. Despite widespread support for uniforms among parents, many feel they lack good value, with 30% dissatisfied and 41% doubtful of sufficient choices. CCPC member Úna Butler stressed the benefits of competitive markets for school supplies.
By promoting competition among suppliers, schools can help to reduce costs and deliver good value.
Having branded uniforms and exclusive suppliers can unwittingly suppress competition between businesses and drive up prices.
