An elementary school in Brooklyn has become a focal point for anti-Israel protests, organized by the PS 139 Families for Palestine group. These weekly vigils have raised concerns about rising antisemitism and potential violence against Jews, particularly after tragic events like the murders of Israeli Embassy aides in Washington D.C. Critics, including local activists, argue these protests spread bigotry and endanger Jewish lives, with claims that Jewish identity is unfairly equated with pro-Israel sentiments. The school community is deeply affected, given the large Jewish population in the area. Many are calling for an end to using school grounds for such rallies.
"It endangers Jewish lives, and embeds bigotry into the fabric of our educational system," said Tova Plaut, a city pre-K coordinator and activist against antisemitism in NYC public schools.
"They hate Jews," he said of the group. "If you're Jewish, it's automatically assumed you're pro-Israel and pro-war."
