Jericho's potential ban sparks debate as to whether students should be left to their own devices
Briefly

Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a new initiative to restrict smartphone use in K-12 schools to foster distraction-free learning environments. A survey at Jericho High School revealed that 70% of teachers believe phones significantly disrupt students' concentration. Many educators support a complete ban, citing increased distractions post-COVID-19 as students became dependent on devices for learning. However, some teachers advocate for incorporating technology in a controlled manner, recognizing students will encounter phones in college and beyond, suggesting a need to balance engagement with realistic expectations around phone use.
"Since devices were incorporated into lessons during remote learning, their use has become a constant habit for students," explained Mr. Kovoros, a U.S. History teacher at Jericho High School.
"Making phones a taboo only increases students' curiosity and desire to use them more. That's why I try to make class engaging while also setting realistic expectations," explained Ms. Izzo, an Economics teacher.
