A federal judge has ordered the temporary restoration of teacher training grants totaling about $250 million, which were previously canceled by the Trump administration. The Education Department had terminated these funds, citing inappropriateness, but eight states challenged the decision, claiming it was arbitrary. U.S. District Judge Myong Joun ruled in favor of the states, stating the cancellation could disrupt educational programs and harm teachers and students. The ruling is seen as an important step to ensure funding continuity for essential teacher training initiatives.
"The Trump administration recklessly and unlawfully terminated grants that had been awarded and obligated to K-12 teacher preparation programs in California and across the country-without any regard for the teachers and students who would pay the price."
U.S. District Judge Myong Joun ruled that the states were likely to succeed on the merits of their claims that the cancellations were "arbitrary and capricious."
Joun added that canceling the grants would have "upended months, if not years of work required to implement programs that rely on these grants."
Eight states sued to reinstate the grants, and Judge Joun's ruling will restore about $250 million in grants.
