Long Island track star Zariel Macchia will compete in state championship after court rules in her favor
Briefly

Zariel Macchia, a promising senior runner from William Floyd and an Olympic hopeful, faced a ban from her winter state championship due to a technicality involving the NYSPHSAA's college rule. After a legal battle initiated by her family, Judge Christopher Modelewski ruled in her favor, allowing her to participate in the upcoming races. Macchia expressed relief and excitement, highlighting the support from the running community as a motivating factor. Now, she prepares to compete with her teammates in several relay and individual events, against a backdrop of prior turmoil.
Judge Christopher Modelewski ruled that the NYSPHSAA was "required to permit" Macchia to partake in this weekend's events on Staten Island.
"Just knowing that I have so many people who want to see me do well, it is definitely a lot of motivation to compete well on Saturday," Macchia said.
