U.S. Rep. Grace Meng has requested the Department of Homeland Security to restore funding for food pantries in New York City, which has been halted during a FEMA review of grants. Many pantries are already struggling with reduced hours and food supplies, impacting vulnerable residents. Meng argues that the delay in funding restoration is causing dire consequences for those in need, labeling the situation as "unacceptable" and "cruel." The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is crucial for assisting families facing hunger or homelessness, according to Meng and local community leaders.
"I urge your department to restore these payments immediately so that food pantries can continue offering essential services that many of my constituents and countless individuals throughout the United States rely on," Meng said in a letter to Noem on March 21.
"Taking food out of the mouths of those who rely on local pantries is unconscionable and unacceptable. It is also cruel and reckless. This essential funding needs to be reinstated now," Meng said in a statement.
