New Jersey Transit engineers, trainmen strike, stranding potentially 350,000 commuters
Briefly

The New Jersey Transit railroad engineers union commenced a strike after years without a pay raise, disrupting services for approximately 350,000 daily commuters. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen represents about 450 members who have not received a pay increase in six years and are advocating for a new contract they began pursuing in late 2019. Governor Phil Murphy indicated that while negotiations are encouraged, a wage increase could trigger demands from other transit unions, leading to significant financial repercussions for New Jersey Transit, which is already under fiscal strain.
"They have gone without a raise for six years and have been seeking a new contract since October 2019," the union said.
"They have money for penthouse views and pet projects, just not for their front-line workers," BLET National President Mark Wallace said in a statement.
