A report by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets reveals that Brooklyn is home to many of the city's top super speeders, who repeatedly violate school zone speed limits. The analysis, prompted by a tragic accident involving a frequent speeder, indicates that traditional fines are ineffective for this small yet dangerous group. Despite accruing vast amounts of fines, many individuals remain unrepentant, showcasing a troubling pattern of behavior. The report heightens concerns about road safety and the effectiveness of current penalties in curbing reckless driving.
The analysis also found that fining super speeders are not enough. Of the top 10, three people have paid off all or significant portions of all their fines, ranging from $17,000-$45,000 each.
These results point to a small population with a shocking pattern of recidivism, resistance to traditional deterrents, and disregard for human life," said Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Ben Furnas.
