Under-eights should not drink slushies containing glycerol, say doctors
Briefly

A review by paediatricians has raised concerns regarding the safety of slushies containing glycerol for children under eight. The study involved 21 cases of children who became acutely unwell after consuming these drinks, manifesting symptoms of glycerol intoxication syndrome. Symptoms included decreased consciousness and low blood sugar. The study advocates for revised public health guidelines and greater awareness among parents and clinicians about the risks associated with these slushies, particularly for younger children, following findings that all but one case occurred between 2018 and 2024.
The review team at University College Dublin highlighted that drinking slushies with glycerol could lead to glycerol intoxication syndrome, especially in children under eight.
Health bodies are urged to ensure clear messaging that children, particularly those under eight, should avoid slush ice drinks containing glycerol due to severe health risks.
