Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar emphasized, 'I am proud of my work in Albany to reimagine New York City's procurement process so we can build our affordable housing, transit, schools, and power grid faster and cheaper. The Greatest City in the World deserves the greatest infrastructure, powered by the latest innovations in construction, design, and procurement.' This statement underscores her commitment to modernizing infrastructure through new laws.
The newly signed bill A8864 transitions public comments online, accelerating procurement for major contracts. Rajkumar noted, 'This change eliminates the outdated requirement for in-person meetings for contracts over $100,000,' allowing an estimated 20-day reduction in project timelines.
Rajkumar's office anticipates that the reforms will clear bureaucratic hurdles, stating, 'This shift will help expedite public works projects, get construction started sooner, and deliver better value for taxpayers,' indicating a proactive approach to improving city projects.
In conjunction with A8864, the bill A10543 introduces progressive design-build, which could potentially curb delays significantly. Rajkumar highlighted, 'Under traditional systems, 64% of capital projects faced delays, collectively exceeding budgets by $54.5 billion,' showcasing the urgency for reform in procurement processes.
