A recent investigation by Amtrak's Office of the Inspector General uncovered a massive kickback scheme involving 119 employees who defrauded the company of $12 million by colluding with unethical medical providers. Despite the serious allegations, over half of these employees still hold their positions. The scheme spanned from 2019 to 2022, with employees taking bribes and submitting false insurance claims. Amtrak is now implementing stricter oversight and training while facing ongoing criminal proceedings against several workers involved.
Inspector General Kevin H. Winters emphasized, "The sheer volume of employees who cavalierly participated in this scheme to steal Amtrak's funds suggests not only a serious lapse in basic ethics, but a troubling workforce culture..."
The OIG reported, "Some of the allegedly dirty workers - mostly located in the New York to DC region - even handed over their kids' insurance information for the con that ran from 2019 to 2022."
