"This Cross Bronx Expressway plan is a throwback of the worst type, in a Robert Moses style with highway engineers working in secret to hoist destructive plans on a community they don't believe knows what's best for itself," said Siddhartha Sanchez, executive director of the Bronx River Alliance, highlighting concerns that bypasses could disrupt local neighborhoods while benefiting only traffic flow.
"Environmentalists argue that while the proposed mile-long elevated highway may ease congestion temporarily, it will have long-term negative impacts on air quality and public health in the surrounding communities," stressing that the environmental costs may outweigh the transportation benefits.
"The coalition of elected officials and transportation advocates gathered to launch the No Cross Bronx Expansion campaign, emphasizing the need to protect air quality and community integrity rather than push for outdated highway expansion strategies in the Bronx," showing a united front against the governor's plan.
"A $150 million federal grant is intended to support the Cross Bronx expansion project, but critics warn that it encourages prioritizing car travel over sustainable community development that could potentially reconnect fractured neighborhoods," indicating a broader theme of sustainable urban planning.
