The Brooklyn Museum has postponed layoffs affecting 47 employees as it seeks additional funding from the New York City Council. Director Ann Pasternak informed staff that layoffs scheduled for March 9 would now extend to March 16, pending potential funding of $2.5 million for the museum's 2026 fiscal year. While this funding would not fully address the museum's $10 million budget deficit, it offers temporary relief and an opportunity to explore further financial options and negotiations with union representatives.
Pasternak wrote, adding that the deadline for layoffs has been extended to March 16. "During this time, we hope to receive formal notification regarding this funding."
That would not close the $10 million budget deficit the Brooklyn Museum is facing, but it could "at least buy some time for the museum to try to find other funding."
