Fed up East Harlem residents are pleading with the Trump administration to shut down a safe injection site run by OnPoint that they claim has sparked crime and chaos since its opening in 2021. In a letter to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, they highlight the daily struggles they face, as drug dealing occurs openly and residents feel unsafe. Grassroots organizations argue that the site violates federal law and call for federal intervention to address the deteriorating conditions in their community.
"Every day in the area outside the facility and in the blocks surrounding the facility drug dealing occurs regularly in broad daylight, while drug addicts can be found nodding off, lying in the street, begging for handouts, and committing petty crime," the note reads.
"Our daily living situation has become wholly untenable as a result of this facility opening in our residential neighborhood," they wrote in the three-page Feb. 17 letter to Bondi.
