FDNY: Crews battle compactor fire at NYCCHA building in Downtown Brooklyn
Briefly

Firefighters in Downtown Brooklyn responded to a compactor fire at a NYCHA building, 177 Sands St., around 7 p.m. on Sunday. The FDNY deployed 20 units and 78 personnel to manage the situation. Residents experienced distress as some reported hearing screams for help. Deputy Chief James Maloney described the escalation as the fire spread up the compactor chute due to blockages. Thankfully, injuries reported were not life-threatening, and crews successfully contained the fire by 8:30 p.m.
It did escalate. It started in the compactor and then it just started spreading up the compactor chute. So there were some clogs and blockages in there. It just kept going up.
It's a little nerve wracking having my sister be on the phone with me the past hour. My mother personally heard kids screaming from the floor below us.
