Firefighter Mark Dziemian, who experienced a cardiac arrest while fighting a fire in Bushwick, received a promotion to Lieutenant in an emotional ceremony. His wife and children accepted the honor on his behalf. Despite his hospital recovery at Rusk Rehabilitation Center, support from the FDNY and family has been unwavering. Dziemian, a former EMT and head of the Pulaski Association, is now badge #1207, symbolizing a connection to FDNY history. A benefit event honoring him is scheduled at Citi Field in June.
This was a civil service promotion, and there was no question in my mind that we wanted to promote him when we reached his number [...] I'd be surprised if there were a dry eye in that room that was filled with a lot of tough people.
New Lieutenant Mark Dziemian, of Bushwick's Engine 217, is currently recovering from the episode at the Rusk Rehabilitation Center in Manhattan, supported by other members of the department as well as his family.
