Following devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, a group opposed to Mayor Karen Bass has launched a fundraising committee for a recall campaign. The committee's formation comes amid criticism of Bass's absence during the crisis and her contentious relationships with former officials. Although the Republican-affiliated operatives behind this recall attempt may face challenges in the heavily Democratic city, they aim to gather sufficient support to place the recall on the ballot, raising questions about Bass's political future.
The filing, submitted nearly two months after a wildfire destroyed swaths of L.A.'s Pacific Palisades neighborhood, will allow Bass' opponents to raise money to put a recall on the ballot.
Douglas Herman, a political strategist for Bass, said in a statement that the recall committee's filing is "nothing more than another extreme right-wing political stunt designed to divide Los Angeles when we need to move forward."
