For the birds: Politicians, activists call for NYC's live poultry markets to be permanently shuttered
Briefly

Following visits to reopened live poultry markets, activists and officials have condemned the inhumane conditions for birds in these facilities. Councilmember Robert Holden noted the presence of open wounds and unsanitary environments, prompting calls for Governor Kathy Hochul to permanently shut them down. Despite temporary closures for inspection due to avian flu concerns, activists argue that insufficient testing practices continue to jeopardize public health. The situation raises serious concerns about health standards in densely populated areas like New York City, highlighting the need for a comprehensive review of these markets.
Each one of these places was worse than the last. I can't imagine they could sell these birds. They had no feathers, open wounds, were bleeding a lot.
They pile these birds in cages on the street, and so there's this yellow guck - probably feces - with the blood on the street.
It doesn't seem sanitary. Why are these places allowed to exist in a crowded area in the middle of New York City?
This is almost worse than doing nothing because it is conning the public into believing they care about their safety.
