House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries indicated that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo may be a viable candidate in the upcoming mayoral race for New York City, suggesting that there is considerable interest among constituents. Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations and criticism over his Covid-19 response, may use this election to relaunch his political career. While Jeffries has expressed interest in discussing Cuomo's potential candidacy, he has not yet spoken with him about it. Notably, Cuomo has garnered support from some Democrats despite his troubled past.
I think he'd be a candidate that a lot of people, as I've heard from the district that I represent, would be very interested in checking out.
The top Democrat did note that he has not talked with Cuomo about the issue as of yet.
Jeffries joined other New York lawmakers in Congress in calling for Cuomo to resign from office back in 2021.
So far, Cuomo has received the endorsement from notable New York Democrats, including Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY).
