Governor Kathy Hochul faced scrutiny over a Democratic bill intending to delay special elections, specifically for Rep. Elise Stefanik's seat, amid negotiations with Trump. After halting the bill, Hochul claimed no responsibility for its introduction, asserting it was not her role as governor. However, Senate Democratic leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins stated the initiative originated with Hochul. This proposed bill could leave Republican-held seats vacant, impacting the House majority until November, while Hochul's distancing raised questions about transparency and accountability within the party's leadership.
"It began with her and if she's interested in holding it that's fine," Stewart-Cousins told reporters Tuesday.
"I don't introduce bills. It's not the role of the governor," Hochul told reporters at a news conference.
"It's always nice to have a partner that's working in the same direction," Stewart Cousins said.
The bill would have changed special election rules so that Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik's seat would stay empty when she resigns to become Trump's ambassador to the UN.
