On Friday, advocates for street safety and immigrant rights rallied in Lower Manhattan against the NYPD's new policy of issuing criminal summonses to cyclists for traffic violations, claiming it unfairly penalizes them compared to motorists. Protesters emphasized that harsher penalties for cyclists could deter cycling, which promotes environmental and personal health. Immigrant groups raised concerns that delivery workers risk significant penalties, including deportation. NYPD officials defended the policy as necessary for enforcing traffic safety, stressing that all road users must comply with traffic rules, while acknowledging the challenges in penalizing unlicensed e-bike riders.
It seems unfair to me that cyclists should receive a higher penalty for doing the same thing that a person in a car would do.
Every person is obligated to follow the very basic rules of the road when it comes to traffic safety. Compliance is not optional.
