Long Island Republicans have criticized the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for a new payroll tax increase that they claim will negatively impact local businesses. The tax hike, intended to support a $68 billion capital plan, was deemed 'anti-businessâ by local legislators who argue that it undermines employers' ability to offer raises or hire new employees. They called for a comprehensive audit to scrutinize the MTA's fiscal practices, emphasizing a need for transparency in the agency's expenditures amidst its ongoing financial crisis and wasteful spending.
There's going to be employers that can't give the raises they had planned on... because of this increased tax levied by the government.
The worst part of all of this, the proposal does absolutely nothing to address the root problem - the MTA's utter lack of fiscal responsibility for its systematic culture of waste.
The legislator demanded that before Albany agrees to any tax hike, that the MTA go through a full independent audit to give residents... a clear picture of where the money's going.
If passed, the budget deal would jack up the MTA tax on businesses with payrolls over $10 million a year.
