New York's $9 congestion tax on drivers entering Manhattan remains in effect despite President Trump's Administration calling for its cancellation. The MTA's traffic camera system continues to collect the fee, which aims to ease traffic and finance public transit infrastructure. Trump's transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, called this fee a "slap in the face" to small businesses and working-class citizens, challenging its legality. However, the MTA reaffirmed its commitment to congestion pricing through legal means, citing the feeble merits of Duffy's arguments against it.
The transportation department insists it will not back off the April 20 deadline, stating, "we will not hesitate to use every tool at our disposal" to enforce it.
The fee, established on January 5, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and generate substantial revenue for New York's public transportation network.
