The New York City Council is set to debate two bills aimed at combatting immigration services fraud as the city sees an influx of migrants. Intro 205, sponsored by Councilmember Shahna Hanif, seeks to improve the messaging around immigration services and provide community outreach to reduce misleading information. Intro 980, sponsored by Councilmember Julie Won, aims to increase penalties on immigration service providers that violate service regulations. The measures arise amid heightened fears of deportation under the Trump administration, with a rise in scams targeting vulnerable immigrants.
Fraudulent providers take advantage of that fear and anxiety in communities, and people sell services that may not be legal or helpful to people.
This bill would require the outreach to include information about common fraudulent schemes, and how to avoid them and to be conducted through specific media.
