Park Slope Merchants Want Tweaks to Open Streets
Briefly

The Open Streets initiative in Park Slope is awaiting a 2025 season approval from the Department of Transportation, generating mixed feelings among local business owners about its impact. A survey has been launched to gather community feedback. The initiative began in 2020 to promote outdoor activities during the pandemic, and despite its initial temporary nature, it gained popularity. Business owners previously involved are concerned about financial challenges. A new association aims to revive the program in a scaled-down format amid divided opinions on hours and overall operation.
Opposing merchants hope the survey will highlight the need for compromise, particularly around operating hours.
Additionally, our organization could not make the case to continue the program due to capacity and funding challenges,
To revive the program in 2024, a group of local merchants formed the Fifth Avenue Open Streets Merchant Association and secured sponsorship for a scaled-down version.
The volunteer-led application for Park Slope proposes closing 5th Avenue from Union Street to 4th Street every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
