Progressives in New York City are expressing outrage over Mayor Eric Adams' approach to dealing with federal immigration enforcement, particularly in the context of safety for illegal migrants. Recent events include a memo advising public-hospital staff to refrain from confrontation with ICE agents, leading to a rally where politicians condemned the actions as creating fear and chaos. Critics argue that the sanctuary law endangers the very migrants the law intends to protect, with some believing that the mayor's caution is a form of inadequate leadership.
"This is about fear and chaos," moaned state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, denouncing a memo advising city public-hospital staff not to put themselves in harm's way should ICE agents come knocking.
Legal Aid Society lawyer Kathllen Klift called the memo 'deeply alarming,' emphasizing the need for safety nets that protect vulnerable populations from enforcement actions.
City Councilwoman Rita Joseph lamented the loss of safe havens, saying, 'Those safety nets were taken away,' highlighting the increasing risks for migrants in the city.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams criticized Mayor Adams, stating, 'I am particularly disappointed that we have a mayor who is more of an assistant to Donald Trump than a mayor for New York City,' reflecting the discontent among progressives.
