On Saturday, brush fires ignited on Long Island, causing the closure of sections of the Sunrise Highway due to high-risk fire conditions stemming from low humidity and strong winds. Emergency services and local fire departments responded to multiple locations, with no injuries or evacuations reported. Governor Kathy Hochul assured the public of ongoing coordination with local partners to aid firefighting efforts. Additionally, a separate brush fire broke out in Brooklyn, which crews managed by the afternoon. The National Weather Service provided warnings regarding the potential for rapid fire spread, urging caution with ignition sources.
The National Weather Service had warned earlier on social media that low humidity and northwest winds of 30 to 35 miles per hour would create an elevated risk for fire spread.
We are in close communication with local partners on Long Island to coordinate assistance and make sure they have the resources they need to protect their communities, Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York said on social media.
Images on social media showed billowing black smoke as multiple fire departments responded.
About 20 miles west, in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, another brush fire broke out around 1 p.m. on Saturday.
