WhatsApp achieved a significant legal victory against NSO Group, as a jury ordered the spyware manufacturer to pay over $167 million in damages. This ruling comes after a five-year legal battle initiated in October 2019, alleging NSO Group exploited a flaw in WhatsApp to hack over 1,400 users. Key testimonies during the trial revealed the sophisticated nature of the attack, where a fake call was used to deliver spyware without user interaction. The case also highlighted NSO's conflicts with clients and provided insight into the spyware's operational details, uncovering its usage by several governments.
"The zero-click attack... worked by placing a fake WhatsApp phone call to the target," as WhatsApp's lawyer Antonio Perez said during the trial.
"Once received, those messages would trigger the user's phone to reach out to a third server and download the Pegasus spyware... they needed to make this happen was the phone number," said Perez.
