The SEC and Big Ten commissioners have proposed changes to the seeding format for the upcoming College Football Playoff. Instead of reserving top seeds for conference champions, a new model would see the top four teams, as ranked by the committee, earn top seeds and byes. This proposed change aims to address past controversies and provide a fairer assessment of team performance, allowing the potential for independent teams like Notre Dame to benefit. Any changes, however, require unanimous approval from all 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director before implementation in 2025.
"We’re in favor of going to a straight seeding, where there’s no difference between rankings and seeing like we had this year," Petitti said. "We’re in support of that for next year."
"I’m prepared to vote for seeding change, but it has to be unanimous," Sankey said, underscoring the importance of consensus among FBS commissioners.
