Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has undergone yet another surgery on his Achilles tendon, putting his participation in the 2025 season in serious doubt. Watson met with Dr. Robert Anderson and the surgery is expected to require at least seven months of recovery time. This marks the second consecutive year Watson's season has ended prematurely due to injury concerns, as he had previously missed the latter part of the 2023 season following shoulder surgery.
Watson's performance has not met expectations since joining the Browns, contributing to the team's struggles. He has started only 19 games since the Browns traded away three first-round picks and awarded him a fully guaranteed $230 million contract in 2022. The Browns lost six out of the seven games he started in the 2024 season while Watson recorded the lowest QBR in the NFL before his recent injury.
To address struggling quarterback performance and high interception rates, the Browns are actively considering free agency options and holding a favorable position with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 draft. The team is poised to explore top quarterback prospects to upgrade their roster, underscoring the uncertain future of Watson as the only remaining contract quarterback of the group.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry indicated a significant overhaul is likely in their quarterback room for next season. He mentioned that Watson's recovery setback was discovered during an end-of-season physical, which has intensified the team’s need to seek improvement in that area, especially after finishing with the most interceptions in the NFL this past season.
