TE-thin Broncos sign Lewis, 41, to practice squad
"I knew he'd been training and I know he's in great shape and he's a tremendous blocker,"
"I'm glad he's here, he's a tremendous leader ... a good first day [of practice]."
"I think he's obsessed with taking care of himself, that has a lot to do with it,"
"His consistency, I think when he's 55 [years old], he's going to be able to block the D gap."
The Denver Broncos added 41-year-old Marcedes Lewis to the practice squad to address a thin spot at tight end after recent injuries. Lewis, a 2006 first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, is entering his 20th NFL season. Coach Sean Payton praised Lewis's conditioning, blocking ability and leadership, noting Lewis trains twice daily and remains highly consistent. Payton referenced 2006 as a long-ago season by comparing Lewis's rookie year context to current coaches and players. Lewis joins the Broncos primarily to provide blocking, veteran presence and depth at the tight end position.
