Animal activists have raised alarms over live poultry markets in Brooklyn and Queens allegedly selling sickly chickens as they prepare for a shutdown due to bird flu. NYCLASS reported unsanitary conditions at several markets, including TIBA in Queens, prompting concerns about the spread of avian flu. Gov. Hochul's recent executive order mandates a temporary closure of live poultry markets in the city after local bird flu cases were found. Activists argue the measures come too late, as the conditions for the birds are dire and testing remains insufficient.
"I absolutely do suspect that many of these birds could and most likely do have avian flu... There's only been a handful of testing done."
"The birds shown in the images were crammed into too-crowded cages with several chickens appearing to be dying," says Birnkrant.
