Funky smell consumes Staten Island neighborhood as city struggles to find source

A strong rotten-egg odor has affected Bulls Head residents on Merrill Avenue since the fall, seeping into homes and cars. Neighbors reported the smell coming from sewer hookups and made multiple 311 complaints that were initially dismissed. Contractors and city crews were later called in to inspect and clean sewers at Merrill and Graham Avenues. Residents continue to report the odor and associated health effects, including nausea, headaches, and migraines. Some homeowners fear the smell is deterring buyers and are concerned about what they and their children have been exposed to. Investigation and cleanup efforts are ongoing.
