Hero cop save the lives of two choking babies in less than a month
"NYPD When New Yorkers sign up to become police officers, one of the most common reasons for taking the oath is a desire to help people and save lives. NYPD Officer Freddy Cerpa can say he has achieved that goal twice over, all in a matter of weeks. Cerpa is not being hailed as a hero because he had to draw his service weapon and fight off danger, but instead because of the way he remained calm during a life-or-death situation and saved the lives of two babies."
"I actually knew the child and the mother; she helped me through a hard time when my mother was sick with cancer, Officer Cerpa said. I was just glad I was able to repay the favor of helping her with her child and her time of need. When a mother comes to you, asking for life-saving help with their child, putting that trust in you, it's a lot of pressure, but it also means a lot. The fact that I was able to help her it's very fulfilling."
Officer Freddy Cerpa saved two young children from choking in separate incidents within weeks. On Dec. 7, while off duty at his Long Island home, he performed back slaps to clear mucus from a 1-year-old who had stopped breathing, restoring the child's breathing before paramedics arrived. Cerpa knew the family personally and cited repaying a past kindness during his mother's illness. On Jan. 16, Cerpa again aided in saving a child at an apartment near Watson Avenue and Manor Avenue in the Bronx, arriving with Officer Megan Ficken and remaining calm under pressure to preserve life.
