"Queens DA Melinda Katz stated, 'This was an act of mass murder. As alleged, Roman Amatitla deliberately set a fire in an occupied building and killed four people, including a 3-year-old girl.'"
"Amatitla admitted he heard multiple people inside the building when he set the fire and knew his actions could harm someone, but did it because he 'needed to get his anger out.'"
Roman Amatitla, 38, is charged with murder and arson after allegedly setting a fire in a Flushing, Queens apartment building, resulting in four deaths. He had no known ties to the building or its residents. Amatitla reportedly ignited the fire at the base of a stairwell and then went to a gas station for beer, returning to watch the flames spread. He acknowledged hearing people inside and admitted to acting out of anger, knowing his actions could cause harm.
