New Yorkers face sweaty week ahead as end-of-summer heat wave takes hold
Briefly

New Yorkers are bracing for a significant late-summer heat wave, with temperatures climbing towards record highs of 94 degrees on Tuesday. The humidity will intensify the heat, leaving many locals seeking shade or enjoying summer activities like a day at Coney Island beach. Residents are taking advantage of the warm weather, reminiscing about their affection for summer. The surge in heat comes as a surprise, following a season marked by frequent rain and mild temperatures, making the sweltering days feel particularly intense as summer draws to a close.
"Today's [the] beach, tomorrow's golf, Wednesday recuperate," said Carl Bergonzo, 67, of Gravesend, Brooklyn. "I'm Sicilian, so I don't need to put any [sunscreen] on."
Maria Gonzalez, 54, said she was happy to get one last chance to soak up the rays on the beach at Coney Island before cooler weather arrives. "I'm a summer baby. I always loved the ocean, [I] just relax," said Gonzalez.
"Better than when it rains," said Zheleznyak, 39, of Sheepshead Bay. "You're really stuck at home [and] you're gonna be really, really bored."
