NYC announces more protected time off for workers
"They are faced with impossible choices between their lives and their livelihoods,"
"You should be able to go handle your business, take care of people who depend on you and keep your job,"
"It would help if I did have a little bit of extra time at the job where I didn't have to feel a little bit guilty as if I could possibly lose my job by trying not to lose a life of the family,"
New York City will provide additional protected unpaid time off for working residents, ensuring more job-protected leave. The rule takes effect Sunday and covers more than three million employees. Workers receive an extra 32 hours of unpaid leave immediately upon hire and again on the first day of each calendar year. The policy includes protections against employer retaliation so employees can manage personal and family needs without risking employment. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will enforce the rule, notify 56,000 employers of the change, and may fine noncompliant businesses up to $2,500 per affected employee.
