NYC opens its first rest stop for delivery workers
""This is what the public realm is made for. This is what it means for our city to serve the people who keep it running," said New York City Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura."
"More than 80,000 men and women board their vehicle of choice every day and shepherd everything from burrito bowls to groceries to many people's front doors."
"The idea for deliverista hubs sits at the intersection of workers rights and climate justice, addressing the vulnerabilities of delivery workers to extreme weather events."
The first 'deliverista hub' has opened in downtown Manhattan, providing a safe space for app-based delivery workers to rest and charge their e-bikes. This initiative, championed by Los Deliveristas Unidos, addresses the needs of over 80,000 delivery workers who face extreme weather conditions. The hub's opening follows years of advocacy and was expedited by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura emphasized the importance of serving the workers who contribute significantly to the city's economy and resilience against climate change.
