"Cyclists on the Hudson River Greenway near West 54th Street now travel under an overpass to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, bypassing traffic to the cruise ships. The area had long been a bottleneck of cyclists, joggers and vehicles dropping and picking up cruisers. It is finally fixed as part of a $350 million project to build new film and tv studios on Pier 94."
"Cyclist Mike Derewianik, 63, said the stretch of the greenway had been a source of aggravation for decades. "It was a mess. There was no rhyme - it was no good." said Derewianik, who was headed south on the greenway after crossing the George Washington Bridge from New Jersey. "This is going to be a lot better," he said. Another cyclist, Paula Young, said the new path will help ease pedal traffic."
The Hudson River Greenway near West 54th Street has been reconfigured so cyclists travel under an overpass to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, removing a longstanding bottleneck of cyclists, joggers and vehicle pick-ups. The change is part of a $350 million Pier 94 redevelopment to build new film and TV studios. The greenway handles nearly 7,000 cyclists daily. Cyclists praised the smoother, safer path. Bike advocacy leaders and the city's Economic Development Corporation highlighted the public-realm improvements and industry growth benefits. The city released a greenway master plan proposing more car-free paths across the five boroughs.
