Zohran Mamdani, 34, was sworn in as New York City's youngest mayor and the city's first Muslim and first mayor of South Asian descent, taking the oath on the Qur'an. Mamdani vowed to reject low expectations and pledged to govern expansively and audaciously while acknowledging possible failures but asserting the courage to try. The inauguration narration was provided by Bernie Wagenblast, a 69-year-old transgender transportation journalist and the familiar voice of the NYC subway. Wagenblast, whose transportation career began in 1976, founded the Transportation Communications Newsletter in 1998 and reaches over a billion subway riders annually.
